This lecture course is an introduction to the traditional societies and cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. It will include an examination of hunting and gathering societies throughout the continent, East African cattle herders and horticultural groups in West and central Africa. Special attention will be given to geography, pre-contact civilizations, and the impact of the slave trade, colonization and the emergence of independent African states.
