HIST 0212 - COLONIAL EMPIRES IN THE MODERN WORLDMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course addresses the chronology of the modern age of empire, beginning with the rise of the British East India Company in the second half of the 18th century and ending with the end of Portuguese rule in Angola in 1975. It addresses issues such as the changing aims of empire building in the 19th and 20th centuries, the experiences of colonized peoples and indigenous responses to colonization, the technological and ideological aspects of imperialism, and the issues of race, gender, power and violence that shaped the colonial experience.
