WRITNG 0208 - WRITING ABOUT NATURE, PLACE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Writing about Nature, Place, and Environmental Issues will focus on techniques for a variety of approaches and genres-poetry, personal essay and memoir related to nature and place, journalism, cultural commentary, and critical pieces related to climate change, environmental ethics, and activism. We'll investigate how creative writing can open dialogue about environmental issues, investigate power dynamics between people and place, and spark cultural change. Professional model texts will allow us to explore various aspects of craft, including image, narrative, scene, character, voice, and dialogue. We will read these model works through intersectional lenses and generate three pieces of writing as well as engaging in rigorous but supportive workshop feedback sessions. Students will also create a final project of at least fifteen pages of writing and revision.
