ENG 0213 - AFRICANA WRITERS ON NATURE

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
The story of nature writing in America has typically focused on the experience and legacy of white men on the frontier. In this course we will explore the contributions Black writers have made over the past two centuries to our understanding of the place of nature and the environment in American life and culture. Authors to be studied include Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Alice Walker, Christian Cooper, bell hooks, Drew Lanham, and others. We will see how these writers, drawing on Africana traditions and experiences, work to establish a more inclusive (and, therefore, realistic) narrative about humans' place in nature and the environment, one that often engages with, but frequently challenges, the dominant narrative that has been built around figures like Henry David Thoreau and John Muir.
