Pre-Dental Hygiene

This program is offered through Pitt-Bradford and the Education & Training Center at Pitt-Titusville (ETC). The prerequisite courses are set for the program and must be completed with the grading standards required by the School of Dental Medicine to determine acceptance into the Dental Hygiene program.

The prerequisite courses can be taken in person at Pitt-Bradford or PItt-Titusville (ETC). To enroll in the prerequisite courses, students should complete the application. Once the Admissions staff has reviewed the application, they will contact students regarding their status and the next steps.


Dental Hygiene Program

Once accepted into the Pre-Dental Hygiene Program, students are eligible to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program. This program has limited capacity, and admission requires successful completion of academic course prerequisites, meeting the School of Dental Medicine admissions requirements, a successful personal interview, and space availability in the program. The enrollment process begins in the fall, with the program starting the following August.

Required Prerequisites


Applicants must successfully complete the following courses before applying to Pitt School of Dental Medicine for BSDH (Bachelor of Science Dental Hygiene). These pre-requisite courses are offered at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford or the ETC at Pitt Titusville.

An overall college-level GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for the Dental Hygiene Hybrid program admission.

A total of 31 credits of prerequisite courses is required. Admission to the BSDH is not guaranteed.EN

Students must achieve a final grade of C or better in these general education courses: 

  • ENG 0101: English Composition: 3 credits
  • PSY 0101: Psychology: 3 credits
  • SOC 0101: Sociology: 3 credits
  • COMM 0104: Communication/Speech: 3 credits

Students must achieve a final grade of B or better in the following science courses. It is preferred that science courses be taken within 3 years of application.

  • BIOL 0101: Intro to Cell and Molecular Biology 4 credits, or BIOL 0091: Concepts of Biology 3 credits
  • CHEM 0101: General Chemistry I or CHEM 0103: Biological Chemistry 4 credits
  • BIOL 0212/0222 Anatomy and Physiology 1 Lecture and Lab: 4 credits
  • BIOL 0213/0223 Anatomy and Physiology 2 Lecture and Lab: 4 credits
  • BIOL 0202: Microbiology with Lab: 4 credits
